Tanjong Pagar reveals master plan for improving residents’ accessibility

SINGAPORE: A 5-year master plan was launched by the Tanjong Pagar Town Council for its estates on Sunday 16th of August.

The masterplan for Radin Mas SMC and Tanjong Pagar GRC will include improved connectivity and outdoor lifts. In the hilly terrain of the area, “sky bridges” would be constructed to connect the second and third storeys of buildings in order to ease the stress of climbing long, steep flights of the stairs. Another thing included in the master plan is additional outdoor lifts to feature link bridges.

With the consideration of residents’ feedback, the council of the town is in the developmental process of the plan as they consult with Government agencies including Land Transport Authority and the Housing and Development Board.

In an address by Ms Indranee Rajah at an event for the occupants of the new Build-to-Order housing project Tiong Bahru, she stated that “In the past, the main occupant would have been elderly people since the estate was an old one. Following this transformation, however, we expect more childcare facilities.” “I think linkways are equally important since there are sky bridges in some places, but we need to improve access and mobility for the elderly ones and also for younger families using prams.”

The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew was also praised by Ms Indranee for his effort in the community. “He has left a great legacy. His work in this community remains amazing and astonishing. And it is not right to relax and just enjoy what the past generation has done. The baton has been transferred and our duty is to ensure that we make progress. We ought to nurture a vision of where we aspire to be. This is the legacy he has left with us and we cannot afford to remain where we are, but move forward.” She stated.

The founding Prime Minister served as a Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC.
